Green Policy

Big Fish is committed to manufacturing practices which protect our environment; our outdoor spaces as well as those indoors. Our primary goal is to use sustainable or recycled materials in our products. If sustainable or recycled materials are not available, we will institute acceptable recycling programs for the waste that we create.

Big Fish looks to the creativity of future technological advances in materials that will help solve many of our planet's current environmental challenges. We continue to work with the many agencies and organizations in our local area to better educate ourselves and others on the best environmental practices. We are dedicated to reviewing our internal policy and practices regularly to respond to advances as well as new information.

Some of our current practices are listed below:

Mouldings
We purchase mouldings from manufacturers who partner with the American Forests and the Global ReLeaf Forest Foundation, which promotes forest restoration and preservation.

Many of our domestic mouldings are produced from wood residue that would have previously taken up space in our landfills. This material, similar to MDF, is an “Environmentally Preferred Product”, as it has virtually 0% toxic material, for a safer and cleaner indoor environment.

We work with our international moulding suppliers to encourage sustainable forest management policies in keeping with the International Tropical Timber Organization.

Mats and Finishing
Our products are all designed with mats made from recycled paper. We recycle all of the scrap matboard that we produce.
If mats from a sustainable resource are required, we can quote using mats made from cotton.

All of the glues and finishing materials that we use in our processes are water-based and have no toxic components.

Shipping
We have partnered with some of our regular suppliers to provide materials shipped on metal reusable pallets, rather than using those made from wood. These metal pallets last much longer and this little step helps to keep our woodlands protected.

Our shipping boxes and corrugated material contain over 30% recycled material.

General
We proudly recycle all cardboard, mat board and office paper from our manufacturing facility in Linthicum, MD.

We can provide biodegradable foamboards, which are made from 100% recycled fibers and white paper liners certified by the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI). The foam center is formulated with “bio resins” which break down in landfills in 9 months to 5 years.

Big Fish safely disposes of or donates all old electronic and computer equipment according to local requirements.

Every year, local schools and organizations in the Baltimore area are the recipients of large amounts of scrap artwork, matboards and frames that would have otherwise filled our dumpsters, and eventually our landfills.

We proudly support local organizations, such as Businesses for the Bay, which helps to educate local citizens and businesses on the prevention of contaminating our precious national treasure, the Chesapeake Bay.
